Apply to bring your ASCE Geo-Institute Graduate Student Organization, Underground Construction Association Student Chapter, or ASCE Student Chapter to a tunnel project construction site.

Travel grants are provided to accepted student groups to cover or defray the costs of travel to the project site. Priority will be given to student groups within a half-day’s travel to the tunnel project site.

Important information about the tour:

  • The tour will include an above-ground presentation, a tour of the underground project, and lunch with members of the tunnel design and/or construction team.
  • Specific dates will be coordinated with the student chapter and the project site.
  • All participants must be over 18.
  • Each attendee must sign a release form, to be provided, prior to the tour. Background checks may also be required.
  • Tunnel entry is planned as part of the tour, but given the nature of construction projects, entry cannot be guaranteed.
  • Site safety requirements will be established by the Contractor. Hardhats, safety glasses, and safety vests will be provided on site. All attendees must wear long pants, shirts with sleeves, and steel-toed boots.
  • Participants should plan on tours ranging from a half day to full day and will include presentations by key project personnel.
  • Attendee limits are for underground participation. A faculty advisor can join as an additional attendee for the above-ground portion of the program, if desired.

Funding
  • Airfare subsidy (up to $100 pp) or university van/ gasoline (estimated $200)
  • Hotel – up to $750 total
  • Meals & Incidentals ($50 pp per day)
Use the number of your attendees and the following figures to estimate your total funding request. Lunch is included as part of the tunnel tour program.
If your group is accepted for a tour, you will be advised of approved funding at the time of acceptance.
After the tour
We expect your feedback after the tour. Following the tour, your student group will be asked to respond to a survey about the program. We will also ask you to share photos of your student group on the tour, and send a brief trip report, with permission for ASCE G-I and UCA to share the photos and quotes on our websites.
