References:
Kitazume (2005)
Murakami et al. (2006)
SHRP 2-Phase I Technology Assessment

Method Summary

ASTM D 422 provides a standardized procedure for determining soil particle size distribution. “The particle size distribution test should be carried out to measure the property of the sand material and to assure that the material is suitable for the SCP method” (Kitazume 2005).

Accuracy and Precision

The test is only as accurate as the representative sample. Reliable values are obtained which can be used to assess the quality of the SCP fill material.

Adequacy of Coverage

Representative tests can be performed to characterize the SCP fill material.

Implementation Requirements

A typical laboratory setup should accommodate the testing procedure.

General Comments

The particle size distribution is important in determining the functionality of the SCP. The compactibility and drainage capacity of the SCP are dependent upon the range of sizes of the particles. It is preferable for the SCP to have a non-plastic fines content lower than 5%, and no greater than 15%. A particle size distribution of the SCP material can be performed to confirm this.
