The growth of cities and the challenges of urban infrastructure mean that more and more construction is going underground. Tunnels and caverns are built to carry freight and passenger rail, create highway links under harbors and mountainous terrain,  convey water and wastewater, and meet a wide array of other infrastructure needs. The design and construction challenges of building in varying ground conditions, and the excitement of creating a project underground, make underground engineering and construction a fulfilling career path.

Would you like to invite an engineer working in the design and construction of underground projects to address your student chapter?

Experienced underground industry speakers are available to address your ASCE/ G-I Student chapter on topics such as

  • Case histories
  • Geotechnical investigation and geotechnical engineering for tunneling
  • Tunnel Design
  • Tunneling methods
  • Soft ground tunnel design and construction by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)
  • Hard rock tunneling by Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)
  • Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) for tunneling
  • Groundwater control and ground improvement for tunneling
  • Designing and monitoring for protection of existing structures during underground construction
  • Geotechnical considerations and seismic design of tunnels
  • Tunnel inspection and rehabilitation
  • A day in the workplace – a young tunnel engineer’s perspective

Speakers will present their topics in a 50 to 60 minute typical lecture period.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Last date to submit applications:

  • For Fall 2016 semester: November 7, 2016
  • For Spring 2017 semester: March 20, 2017

Speaker travel expenses will be reimbursed.
