(2011)
Pokharel (2010)
Webster (1979)
Yang (2010)

Method Summary

Webster (1979) conducted trafficking tests using wheeled vehicles such as XM 878 truck tractor and XM 872 semitrailer handling 50,000 lb capacity container to investigate the confinement effect of grid cell over unstable beach sand and evaluated the benefits of grid cell in terms of rut depth with number of passes and recommended to use hexagonal-shaped aluminum grid cells.

Han et al. (2011), Pokharel (2011), and Yang (2010) conducted moving wheel full-scale accelerated pavement tests with a machine having 12.8 m long reaction frame and an 80 kN single axle load with dual tires to verify the effect of geocell reinforcement on different kind of base course materials over moderate to weak subgrade. The tire pressure was 552 kPa. They evaluated benefits of geocell reinforcement in terms of rut depths and stress distribution angles from the surface course to base-subgrade interface. They used novel polymeric (i.e., polyethylene/polyester) alloy (NPA) geocell for reinforcement.

Accuracy and Precision

The verification method has been successfully used to evaluate the benefits of geocell confinement. The accuracy and precision of this method for geocell-reinforced roadways have been confirmed.

Adequacy of Coverage

This method requires additional funding and resources and can be used for limited test sections.

Implementation Requirements

Implementation requirements (cost, personnel, training, equipment, and time) are somewhat greater than desired.

General Comments

The method is not applicable to a method approach specification but highly applicable to a performance-based specifications. The method can be used for several applications, such as pavement foundation stabilization, construction working platforms, thickness reduction of pavement section, and prolonging pavement service life.
