Project Summary/Scope:
The project required temporary shoring, 5 feet clear of new building lines. The construction site was located on North Boulevard in Richmond, Va. Temporary shoring was required due to a small building site and the new foundations being placed 20 feet below existing grade.

Helical nails were placed on spacing of 5 feet horizontally and 4.5 feet vertically. The nails were hydraulically installed with a 190 John Deere excavator with a 10,000 ft/lb drive head. The anchors were designed and installed from 10 to 17 feet into the soil directly behind the temporary shoring. The anchors were required to achieve an ultimate capacity of 16 to 24 kips, with all being monitored for torque during installation. A total of 228 helical nails were installed.

As site excavation proceeded in 5-foot lifts, the screw-in anchors were installed, wire mesh placed 3 inches off the existing cut, drain board placed behind the wire mesh, and 3 to 6 inches of shotcrete applied. The temporary shoring and excavation continued down in 5-foot lifts until all the screw-in soil nailing was in place to a maximum depth of 20 feet.

Some advantages of using helical nails on this project were: no vibration or excessive noise, small hydraulic equipment, and continuous operation.

Performance Monitoring:
20% of the anchors to be proof tested with a calibrated jack

Case History Author/Submitter:
Personal communication, J.A.
