Reference(s):

HPaylor et al. (2008)

Method Summary

Strain gages and extensometers attached directly to the geosynthetic reinforcement provide a continuous record of the strain in the geosynthetic. The strain in the geosynthetic is a design consideration both during construction and long term. A design parameter can be directly measured by attaching strain gages and extensometers to the geosynthetic.

Accuracy and Precision

The strain gages and extensometers do not provide a direct indication of the quality of construction.

Adequacy of Coverage

Each strain gage and extensometer can only measure one point. In order to provide an increased level of reliability, many devices are required as part of the QC/QA program.

Implementation Requirements

Utilizing strain gages and extensometers attached to geosynthetic reinforcement requires specialized training.

General Comments

Strain gauges and extensometers allow for monitoring performance of the geosynthetic both during construction and long term. This method allows a design parameter to be measured during construction.
